What it is

What is fertigation?

It is the technique of applying fertilisers dissolved in irrigation water, through the farm's irrigation system. Fertiliser is thus distributed by irrigation sector, just like the water.

That is why it makes sense to plan and record irrigation and fertilisation together: which sector was irrigated, for how long and which products were applied on each plot.

The regulations

What Real Decreto 1051/2022 requires

Real Decreto (Spanish Royal Decree) 1051/2022, on sustainable nutrition in agricultural soils, was amended by the Council of Ministers on 21/10/2025. According to the Ministry of Agriculture note issued that day:

  • Since 01/01/2026, all fertilisation operations must be recorded in a farm logbook, on paper or in digital format, with the exemptions set by the regulations.
  • The nutrient management plan has been mandatory since 01/01/2026 on irrigated farms whose crop is sown or planted between 1 March and 30 June, and since 01/09/2026 on all others.
  • Technical advice on fertilisation comes in one year after those dates in nitrate vulnerable zones and two years after outside them.

Treatment, fertilisation and irrigation data go in the same field logbook.

Irrigation and fertigation orders in GAP

GAP prepares irrigation and fertilisation orders as technical support for decisions in the field. Each order sets out the sectors to apply, the irrigation method, ETo (evapotranspiration) and the irrigation time.

  • Management at plot and irrigation sector level.
  • Product consumption in each application method: treatments, fertilisation…
  • Control of the active substances and products applied by estate, variety and plot.
  • Fertiliser stock with supplier orders, goods received and transfers between warehouses or estates.

What is applied in fertilisation also goes into production costs per plot. More on irrigation, fertilisation and treatment management.

What is fertigation?

Applying fertilisers dissolved in irrigation water, through the farm's irrigation system and by irrigation sector.

Does fertilisation have to be recorded in the logbook?

Yes. Since 01/01/2026, all fertilisation operations must be recorded in a farm logbook, on paper or digitally, except for the exemptions in the regulations (Real Decreto 1051/2022).

When did the nutrient management plan become mandatory?

From 01/01/2026 on irrigated land sown or planted between 1 March and 30 June, and from 01/09/2026 everywhere else, according to the Ministry of Agriculture note of 21/10/2025.

Can I create fertilisation orders by irrigation sector?

Yes. GAP has specific management by plot and irrigation sector, with the irrigation method, ETo and irrigation time in each order.
